OTG Smart is a national program that helps local governments reduce barriers to solar energy use for residents and businesses.
Solar Approved
Since the program launched in 2018, more than 16 municipalities across the nation have achieved OTG Smart designation! An OTG Smart designation sends a signal to solar companies that a community is “open for solar business.” It provides official recognition that a community has worked to remove obstacles to solar energy development, helping attract economic development and new jobs.Local governments achieve designation by meeting objective criteria to show they have removed obstacles to solar energy growth. This includes evaluating local processes for permitting, planning and zoning, and market development and finance. OTG Smart also recognizes communities for other activities such as outreach and their work to improve resilience.
How We Work
Open to Everyone
All communities nationwide are eligible to join OTG Smart. Our network of SolSmart Advisor organizations provides hands-on guidance to municipalities.
Providing Visibility
OTG Smart designees can receive recognition through the website, media opportunities, special events, and peer-to-peer outreach.
Meeting Needs
We’re committed to helping underserved communities, rural communities, and all others to achieve their goals — regardless of their experience level on solar energy.
Making an Impact
OTG Smart is helping communities expand solar markets. An independent evaluation found that OTG smart increased a community’s solar capacity by 28 kW per month on average.
